Pindari NAIDOC Online Art Exhibition

During NAIDOC Week, Pindari teams were invited to bring culture to life by creating a unique piece of artwork inspired by a Dreamtime story. These powerful works of art represent connection to Country, tradition, and storytelling through the three dimensions of Dreamtime – spiritual, physical, and social.

A huge thank you to all our teams for your participation and for producing such amazing, thoughtful paintings – your creativity and cultural expression have made this exhibition possible.

#1 Goanna Lizard Story, Perth

This artwork reflects the story of the Goanna Lizard through a deep connection to Country, using circles to represent sandhills, the sun, or waterholes, and footprint tracks linking individual handprints. The team collaborated to express creativity through colour and symbols, creating a piece that celebrates culture, community, and the importance of working together while honouring the stories that guide and connect us.

#2 Barramundi Dreaming, Robe Valley Mesa A

This artwork depicts a story of resilience and creation, inspired by the ancestral being who became stranded in the mountains during a great flood and laid her eggs. These eggs are represented as the pink diamonds of Argyle, symbolising life, endurance, and the lasting connection between Country and its natural treasures.

#3 Emu Jabiru Story, Hope Downs 1

The Dreamtime story of Emu and Jabiru tells of two families connected through marriage who were divided by a misunderstanding over a simple gift. While the story depicts conflict and miscommunication, it also offers lessons about unity, respect, and working together. Our artwork draws on this story to reflect life on the mine site, where we call each other family despite different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. Using colours and symbols—pink and red for love, yellow for care, and silver for reflection—the piece highlights how our words, actions, and choices shape whether we walk together or drift apart. It serves as a reminder that clear communication, positive leadership, and shared values are essential to teamwork, community, and preventing the mistakes of the past from repeating.

#4 Rainbow Serpent, Brockman 4

The Rainbow Serpent is a powerful ancestral being from the Dreamtime who shaped the land, carving rivers, mountains, and valleys as it travelled across a flat and barren earth. It is seen as a life-giving force, bringing rain, filling waterholes, and awakening the plants and animals that gave life and diversity to the world. The Serpent also set down the laws for living, rewarding those who followed them and shaping the landscape with those who did not. After swallowing two Rainbow Lorikeet brothers, it retreated to the sky, transforming into a rainbow to remind people of its presence and the gift of life. Our artwork draws on this story, representing the Rainbow Serpent’s connection to water, renewal, and the flourishing of the land. Through colour, form, and symbolism, the pieces capture the serpent’s strength and its role in giving life, while also reflecting its enduring presence as both creator and guardian of Country.

#5 Tiddalik The Frog Story, Hope Downs 4

The Dreamtime story of Tiddalik tells of a giant frog who drank all the fresh water in the world, leaving the land dry and the animals struggling. It was only through Nabunum the eel’s playful dance that Tiddalik laughed, releasing the water and restoring life. The story teaches lessons about sharing, caring for the environment, and the power of community and joy. This artwork interprets the story in a thought-provoking way, with parts intentionally upside down to reflect how colonisation has disrupted Tiddalik’s world. Through this approach, the piece acknowledges the differing world views of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples while exploring the possibility of living together on the land respectfully and harmoniously.

#6 Seven Sisters, West Angelas Gardening

The Seven Sisters is a significant Dreamtime story from Aboriginal culture, telling of seven celestial sisters who came from the star cluster known as the Pleiades. As they travelled across the land, they were pursued by the spirit Yurlu, who sought to capture one of them. Using their strength, cleverness, and knowledge of the land, the sisters escaped multiple times, eventually rising into the sky. Today, they shine as the Pleiades, while Yurlu follows as the constellation Orion. This artwork created by the teams, depicts this journey of the sisters, capturing their resilience, unity, and transformation into the stars. Through the use of colour, movement, and symbolism, the piece celebrates both the sisters’ connection to the land and their enduring presence in the sky as a reminder of courage and perseverance.

#7 Turtle Story, Mesa J

This artwork was inspired by the guidance of our Indigenous colleague, Sydney Turley-Mamarika, who’s people have a strong connection to turtles and the ocean. In celebrating NAIDOC, the team chose to represent her culture, painting turtles and other animals to honour the deep relationship Sydney’s people have with the land and sea. Through this collaboration, the team experienced a meaningful connection to the culture, and Sydney expressed her appreciation that her people’s stories and connections were respectfully represented in our work.

#9 Rainbow Serpent, Brockman 4

The Rainbow Serpent is a powerful ancestral being who, during the Dreamtime, travelled across a barren land, carving valleys and rivers and bringing life to the world. As the Serpent moved, water flowed, plants grew, and animals emerged to inhabit the earth, sky, and sea. The Serpent also set rules for living, rewarding those who followed them and transforming those who didn’t into features of the land. This artwork is the team’s interpretation of that story, highlighting the importance of respect, connection, and care for one another and for the land we share. It reflects the values we emphasize in our toolbox today around safety and respect. The teams have enjoyed celebrating NAIDOC this year. This piece celebrates both the creativity and the spirit of learning, connection, and cultural appreciation.

#10 Tiddalik the Frog Story, West Angelas

The Dreamtime story of Tiddalik tells of a giant frog who drank all the water in the land, leaving the animals and environment in drought. To restore balance, the community of creatures used their wisdom and humour to make Tiddalik laugh, releasing the water and bringing life back to the land. This story highlights the importance of cooperation, resilience, and care for the environment. This artwork brings the story to life, with Tiddalik painted in vibrant blue to symbolize water and life. Surrounding him are handprints representing the team’s unity and shared responsibility, while dot patterns and animal symbols—like emus and kangaroos—celebrate the richness of Aboriginal culture and the natural world. Spirals and flowing shapes depict the movement of water and the cycle of renewal, making the piece a tribute to collaboration, resilience, and the power of community.

#11 Kangaroo Story, Dunsborough

The Dreamtime story of the mother kangaroo tells how her kindness and bravery were rewarded. Despite the challenge of caring for a joey who wandered off, she helped a blind wombat find water and food and even distracted a hunter to keep the wombat safe. In return, the wombat gifted her a string bag that magically became a pouch—perfect for carrying and protecting her joey. This story teaches the importance of kindness, courage, and looking after others.

#12 Pindari Story, Tom Price NPI

This painting is a representation of what Pindari means to the Tom Price Panel A and B Teams. The three spots on the outside are the different mine sites, Western Turner 1, 2 and Tom Price. The blue dots with the white lines are the waterways between the mine sites. The spear and boomerang hunting tools represent ‘hunting for success’ which stands behind the name ‘Pindari’. The blue and pink colours represent the men and women.
